“We need fifteen percent.”
“Man, I told Terry that but he said standard is to pay you a set rate, per performance.”
“We need fifteen percent.”
My tone didn’t change. I chewed the last of the muffins Pepper had given me last night, waiting to see if Jay Little was going to get his shit right. He’d hooked up the deal with the studio for us to record a couple of songs in Atlanta in December, and we were going to do a couple of shows out there too. He was trying to come on as our full-time manager, but we weren’t going to sign anything with him if dude couldn’t even negotiate a basic deal for us. Yeah, I was asking for a lot, since we didn’t have a big buzz in Atlanta yet. But I wanted to come in strong, valuing our worth, and he needed to get on board with that or step off. Hell, it was a gamble on our end, taking fifteen percent instead of a set rate since we didn’t know what our crowd would be looking like in Atlanta.
I remained silent, waiting as Jay Little huffed in the phone, tempted to end our relationship before it even started. What was the point in paying him to do something I did better? He started to speak, pushed out a loud breath, then stopped.
“Alright, I’ll talk to Terry and see what we can work out.”
“Yeah, you do that. You can let me know what he says when we meet at five to talk about the promo run.”
I hung up and sighed, wiping the muffin crumbs from my fingertips. They were hella good, like everything she made. Pepper reminded me of my grandmama that way. I sat down on the edge of the bed, eyeing Kennedy’s hoop earrings on my dresser as I scrolled through my phone, checking the band’s social media accounts. I paused when I saw Maya’s name pop up in my feed.
Living life without regrets, loving it!
She was posed with some dude who was wearing skinny jeans and glasses, sitting on his lap, smiling like she’d won the lottery. I smirked, shaking my head. We’d officially ended things five days ago. And even though that wasn’t a lot of time, it felt like it. Maybe because it was overdue. I was glad there weren’t any dramatics, no yelling; she didn’t try to throw shit at me. It was mutual. Adult. There weren’t any hard feelings, on my end at least. She was clearly trying to get some sort of reaction out of me with the post—she’d all but tagged me in it. But we were done for good this time. It was a relief. She could get what she needed, and I could… move on.
I eyed Kennedy’s earrings again. It’s not like I wanted to jump back into a relationship when I hadn’t even been single for a week. I didn’t need the headache. I really didn’t have time for the one I was in with Maya.
